The BCM5720 is the same controller Dell uses for the two 1Gb LOM ports of the PowerEdge R750, so a 5720 card adds ports on the same controller as the onboard ones. A x1 card fits almost any free PCIe slot; the four-port 5719 needs an x4 or wider slot.
More ports or more speed
Four gigabit ports on one card are grouped on quad-port adapters and two-port cards of every speed on dual-port adapters; when gigabit is no longer enough, see 10GbE adapters.
