Backplane Compatibility and Selection Guide

Backplanes are not universal — they are matched to a specific chassis SKU and drive count. The same server model (e.g., R640) ships with multiple chassis configurations that use different backplanes. Before ordering a replacement backplane, confirm these three variables:

1. Server model and generation — e.g., Dell PowerEdge R640 14th gen
2. Drive bay configuration — e.g., 8 x 2.5" SFF, 10 x 2.5" SFF (includes 2 rear bays), or mixed SFF/NVMe
3. Original Dell part number — printed on a label attached to the existing backplane board (e.g., 0XXXXX format for Dell)

SAS backplanes connect to the server’s RAID controller (PERC H740P, H730P) via SAS expander cables. SATA backplanes connect directly to the motherboard SATA controller or a SATA HBA. Backplanes with NVMe support include a PCIe signal path alongside the SAS/SATA connections and require a compatible riser and controller configuration in the host server.

How do I find the right backplane for my server?

The most reliable method is the Dell part number from your existing backplane, visible on a label on the board itself. Alternatively, identify your server’s service tag and look up the original backplane part number in Dell’s online parts catalog. Do server backplanes come with a warranty from Enterasource?

Yes. Backplanes include a minimum 90-day warranty. Select backplane models carry extended 1-year coverage. Warranty terms are listed on each product page.
