Intel Xeon E7 Processors
Xeon E7 is Intel's processor family for two-, four- and eight-socket servers, and this page sells E7 v1, v2 and v3 chips as replacements and upgrades for those systems, with further E7 v3 and v4 models listed for quote. The generation decides the fit: Intel assigns E7 v1 to the LGA1567 socket and the v2, v3 and v4 generations to LGA2011-1, and Dell documents the PowerEdge R920 for E7 v2 and the R930 for E7 v3 and v4. Each E7 goes through two lab tests, one as it comes in and one before it goes out.

Within a generation, cores trade against clock speed: the 15-core E7-4890 v2 has a 2.8 GHz base clock, the 6-core E7-8893 v2 a 3.4 GHz one. Instruction and memory support change between generations too. Intel lists SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 but not AVX for v1 parts such as the E7-4830, AVX for the E7-4820 v2 and AVX2 for the E7-4809 v3, which matters for software built to require AVX, and its memory entries read DDR3 for the first two and DDR4 or DDR3 for the third. Although v2, v3 and v4 share LGA2011-1, Dell supports E7 v2 in the R920 and E7 v3 or v4 in the R930, so match the generation as well as the socket.
