Cisco Catalyst 9200 and 9200L switches

The Cisco Catalyst 9200 is Cisco's current-generation campus access family, and it is sold as two lines that look almost identical in a rack and behave differently in a network. The fixed line carries the 9200L designation and ships with its uplinks built into the chassis. The modular line, the plain C9200, takes a network module instead. Everything else that matters on this page follows from that one split, including which switches can be stacked together and which cannot.

The split is permanent per unit. A 9200L cannot be converted into a modular C9200 and a C9200 cannot be fitted with fixed uplinks, so the line is chosen at order time and stays chosen. Two decisions drive nearly every Catalyst 9200 purchase: how much PoE the switch actually has to deliver, and which existing stack, if any, the new switch has to join.

Fixed uplinks or modular uplinks

Uplinks are the first fork. A C9200L carries four fixed uplink ports, and Cisco's configuration table describes them by speed: a -4X model has 4x 1/10G fixed uplinks and a -4G model has 4x 1G fixed uplinks. Those ports are part of the chassis. They cannot be removed, swapped or upgraded, so on the fixed line uplink speed is a purchase decision rather than a component decision.

The modular C9200 takes a network module instead, which makes the same decision reversible. Cisco publishes the module range as C9200-NM-2Y with 2 x 25GE, C9200-NM-2Q with 2 x 40GE, C9200-NM-4X with 4 x 10GE, C9200-NM-4G with 4 x 1GE, and C9200-NM-BLANK for a slot left empty. A site that expects its uplink requirement to change is buying the modular line for exactly that reason; a site that knows what it needs upstream and wants the lower-cost chassis buys the fixed one.

Cisco does not publish the uplink port media for individual 9200L models, only at series level, so confirm the optics you intend to use against the specific unit rather than reading them out of the part number.

Stacking, and the stack you cannot join

Stacking is the second fork, and it is where the two lines separate hardest. The fixed 9200L line stacks over StackWise-80 at a stack bandwidth of 80 Gbps with up to eight members, joined using a C9200L-STACK-KIT. The modular C9200 line stacks over StackWise-160 at 160 Gbps using a C9200-STACK-KIT. Both lines use Type 3 stacking cables, the STACK-T4-50CM, STACK-T4-1M and STACK-T4-3M, with the 50 cm cable supplied as the default.

Cisco also constrains stacking inside each line. The supported stack members for StackWise-160 are described as other C9200 models with the same license level, and for StackWise-80 as other C9200L models with the same license level. That is a compatibility rule, not a feature preference: two switches from the same line that were ordered at different network stack levels will not form a stack together. It is one of the most common reasons a member that looks correct in every other respect refuses to join.

Across the lines, Cisco's rule is flat and worth reading in full: "Mixed stacking is not supported. You cannot stack fixed (C9200L SKUs) with modular (C9200 SKUs) models, or other Catalyst switches, e.g. Cisco Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR Series. Stacking not available on C9200CX switches."

That sentence names the Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR explicitly, and for many sites that is the sentence that decides the purchase. An estate standardised on 2960-X stacks cannot extend one of those stacks with a Catalyst 9200 or 9200L of any kind. The 9200 goes in as a new stack alongside the old one, which is a perfectly good migration path, but it is a different plan from the one a buyer usually has in mind when ordering a single switch.

PoE budgets across the line

A PoE budget is a ceiling shared across whatever is drawing power, not a promise of full power on every port. Cisco's own footnote reads the budget the way a buyer has to: limited by port number and port rating, with 24 PoE+ ports at 30 W each accounting for 720 W. On the Catalyst 9200 the per-port rating is PoE+, which Cisco states as IEEE 802.3at at up to 30 W per port across the series, so the arithmetic is always the same and only the budget changes.

The optional second supply on the fixed line is a second unit of the same part rather than a different, larger one, so a 48-port PoE model expands from 740 W to 1440 W by adding another PWR-C5-1KWAC, and a 24-port model expands from 370 W to 740 W by adding another PWR-C5-600WAC. Sites running on DC use the PWR-C5-715WDC= instead, which provides 485 W on its own. Work the sizing from the connected load rather than from the port count, and the second supply stops being a resilience question and becomes a capacity one.

Models without PoE do not appear in Cisco's PoE power table at all. On a data-only chassis such as the C9200L-48T-4G there is no budget to size, no supply capacity being held in reserve, and no route to adding power later. The C9200L-48P-4X is the other end of the same line, with 48 PoE+ ports and the largest budget in the fixed range. The C9200L-24P-4X sits between the two, at 24 PoE+ ports and a budget Cisco publishes as 370 W on one PWR-C5-600WAC supply.

Network stack license levels

Software licenses and subscriptions are not included unless the listing states otherwise. Cisco sells the Catalyst 9200 in two network stack levels - Network Essentials and Network Advantage - and they are different part numbers with different feature sets rather than a cosmetic suffix. Buying refurbished while Cisco still ships new

Cisco sells the Catalyst 9200 line new, so buying refurbished here is a supply and lead-time decision rather than a last-resort one. The part number is the same and the hardware is the same, which is what makes a refurbished unit a genuine like-for-like replacement inside an existing stack. Common questions

What is the difference between a Catalyst 9200 and a 9200L?
The 9200L is the fixed-uplink line and the plain 9200 is the modular one. A 9200L has four uplink ports built into the chassis, either 4x 1/10G or 4x 1G depending on the model, and they cannot be changed. A modular C9200 takes a network module instead, so its uplink speed can be changed by swapping the module. They also stack differently: StackWise-80 at 80 Gbps on the fixed line against StackWise-160 at 160 Gbps on the modular one. The two lines cannot be stacked together.
Can you stack a C9200L with a C9200?
No. Cisco states that mixed stacking is not supported and that you cannot stack fixed C9200L models with modular C9200 models, or with other Catalyst switches such as the Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR Series, and that stacking is not available on C9200CX switches at all. The two lines use different stacking technologies and different stack kits. There is a further constraint that applies even within one line: Cisco requires every member of a stack to be at the same network stack license level, so two switches from the same line at different levels will not stack either.
How much PoE can a Catalyst 9200 actually deliver?
As much as the published budget allows, shared across the ports drawing power at the time. Can a Catalyst 9200L be stacked with a Catalyst 2960-X?
No, and Cisco names that switch in the rule itself. The published statement excludes stacking a fixed C9200L with other Catalyst switches and gives the Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR Series as its examples. For a site standardised on 2960-X stacks this is the single most important sentence on the page, because a 9200L bought to extend one of those stacks cannot do it. The 9200L will run alongside the existing stack as its own stack, which is a normal migration path, but it will not become a member of the old one.
Are the uplinks on a Catalyst 9200L upgradeable?
No. On the fixed line the uplinks are part of the chassis, so a -4X model keeps its four 1/10G uplinks and a -4G model keeps its four 1G uplinks for the life of the switch. There is no slot, no module and no field upgrade that changes them. If uplink speed is something the design expects to revisit, the modular C9200 is the line that keeps that decision open, because its uplinks arrive on a network module that can be swapped for a faster one later.
