Intel Xeon E5-2600 v2 Processors
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v2 processors (Ivy Bridge EP) are two-socket DDR3 server CPUs with 4 to 12 cores, 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes and four DDR3 channels per socket, and they run in the Dell PowerEdge R720 and HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8. Buy them to add a second CPU, replace a failed one or move a first-generation E5-2600 server up to as many as 12 cores per socket. Every processor is tested in our lab before shipping and carries an Enterasource warranty.

E5-2600 and E5-2600 v2 compared
On this platform the processor model caps DDR3 speed. HPE's ProLiant DL380p Gen8 QuickSpecs place each v2 model in a DDR3-1866, 1600 or 1333 band, and Dell's PowerEdge R720 spec sheet lists DDR3 at up to 1866 MT/s across 24 DIMM slots. Against the first generation, Intel's specifications show what v2 adds:
| Intel specification | E5-2600 (v1) | E5-2600 v2 |
|---|---|---|
| Code name | Sandy Bridge EP | Ivy Bridge EP |
| Most cores per processor | 8 | 12 |
| Fastest DDR3 | 1600 MT/s | 1866 MT/s |
| Socket | LGA2011-0 | LGA2011-0 |
The v2 line-up in HPE's classes
HPE's DL380p Gen8 QuickSpecs sort the v2 family into entry, base and performance processors, and each class carries its own DDR3 ceiling:
| HPE class | Cores | Power (TDP) | QPI speed | Fastest DDR3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 4 | 80W | 6.4 GT/s | DDR3-1333 |
| Base | 6 to 10 | 60W to 95W | 7.2 or 8.0 GT/s | DDR3-1600 |
| Performance | 4 to 12 | 95W to 130W | 8.0 GT/s | DDR3-1866 |
The performance class holds the high-clock four-, six- and eight-core models at 130W alongside the 10- and 12-core parts, so a high clock does not require the most cores. For memory, HPE notes that LRDIMMs, RDIMMs and UDIMMs cannot be mixed within a Gen8 server.
Upgrading a first-generation E5-2600 server
HPE supports a processor upgrade from the original E5-2600 family to E5-2600 v2 in the DL380p Gen8, and Dell's R720 spec sheet lists both families for that server. v2 processors take DDR3 only; Intel ARK lists DDR3 from 800 to 1866 for the fastest v2 models, so pair them with DDR3 server memory.
The Intel Xeon E5-2600 family hub covers every E5-2600 generation, with separate E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 pages and the full list of Intel Xeon processors.
E5-2600 v2 questions
- Can I upgrade an E5-2600 (v1) server to v2 processors?
- Yes, where the server maker supports it. HPE offers a processor upgrade from the E5-2600 to the E5-2600 v2 in the DL380p Gen8 and publishes instructions for it, and Dell's R720 spec sheet lists both families. The LGA2011-0 socket and DDR3 memory carry over, and v2 lifts the memory ceiling to DDR3-1866 and the core count to 12 per processor.
