Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 Processors
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors (Broadwell) are two-socket server CPUs with 4 to 22 cores, four DDR4 memory channels and 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes, built for servers such as the Dell PowerEdge R630 and HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9. The family has high-core-count parts at the top, frequency-optimized parts with few cores and high clocks, and low-power L models, so weigh cores, clock and power together. Each v4 processor is tested on arrival and retested before dispatch, and every one carries an Enterasource warranty.

Memory speed across the E5-2600 v4 family
The processor model sets the memory ceiling on this platform. HPE's ProLiant DL380 Gen9 QuickSpecs rate every v4 model at a maximum of DDR4-2400, 2133 or 1866, with the entry models at the lower speeds, and note that the speed actually reached also depends on the number and type of DIMMs installed.
| E5-2600 v4 at a glance | Intel and HPE specifications |
|---|---|
| Code name | Broadwell EP |
| Socket | LGA2011-3 |
| Cores | 4 to 22 |
| Memory | DDR4, four channels, rated 1866 to 2400 MT/s by model |
| PCIe | 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0 |
| Processors per server | Up to 2 |
The v4 line-up by bin
HPE's DL380 Gen9 QuickSpecs sort the v4 line-up into three bins, and the bin sets the QPI link speed and the memory ceiling together:
| Bin (QPI speed) | Cores | Base clocks | Power (TDP) | Fastest DDR4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.6 GT/s | 4 to 22 | 1.7 to 3.5 GHz | 65W to 160W | DDR4-2400 |
| 8.0 GT/s | 4 to 10 | 1.8 to 2.6 GHz | 55W to 90W | DDR4-2133 |
| 6.4 GT/s | 6 or 8 | 1.7 GHz | 85W | DDR4-1866 |
HPE also notes that its processors above 120W use a high-efficiency heatsink in the DL380 Gen9, and that 2133 and 2400 MT/s memory cannot be mixed in one server. Matching modules are on DDR4 server memory.
Moving a server from v3 to v4
Dell's PowerEdge R630 manual lists support for E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, and HPE supports a field upgrade from v3 to v4 in the DL380 Gen9. HPE also states that v3 and v4 processors cannot be mixed in one server, so both sockets need v4 parts once you upgrade.

E5-2600 v4 questions
- Will an E5-2600 v4 work in a server that shipped with v3?
- In most v3 servers, yes. HPE supports a field upgrade from v3 to v4 in the DL380 Gen9, and Dell's R630 manual lists v3 or v4 processors. Replace both processors together, since HPE rules out a v3 and a v4 in the same server, and check the server maker's upgrade instructions and BIOS support first. Existing DDR4 runs, at the speed the new processor and DIMMs allow.
- Which E5-2600 v4 processors support DDR4-2400?
- Most of the line. In HPE's DL380 Gen9 QuickSpecs every v4 model with 12 or more cores runs DDR4-2400, as do most of the high-clock four- to eight-core models; the mid-range eight- and ten-core models stop at DDR4-2133, and the two entry models at DDR4-1866. HPE adds that the speed reached also depends on the number and type of DIMMs.
