Intel Xeon Platinum Processors
Refurbished Intel Xeon Platinum processors: the top Xeon Scalable tier, model numbers beginning with 8, from the 1st Gen Platinum 8100 series to the 5th Gen 8500 series, with 4 to 64 cores. Core counts climb with the generations, from the FCLGA3647 parts of the 1st and 2nd Gen to the FCLGA4189 and FCLGA4677 parts that follow. Each Platinum CPU is checked in our lab on intake and checked again at dispatch.

Platinum against Gold
Platinum is the tier that scales furthest and carries the most cores, not a faster version of Gold at the same core count. In the 1st and 2nd Gen, standard Platinum parts scale to eight sockets where Gold stops at four; in the 4th and 5th Gen they carry four UPI links where Gold has three; and in every generation the highest core count Intel ARK lists belongs to a Platinum part.
What Platinum offers, generation by generation
Intel numbers Platinum parts with a leading 8 and Gold parts with 6 or 5. Intel ARK lists three UPI links on 1st to 3rd Gen Platinum parts and four on the 4th and 5th Gen parts, and the number of sockets a part scales to depends on the generation and suffix rather than the tier alone:
| Platinum series | Generation | UPI links | Max sockets, standard parts | Fastest memory | Socket | Most cores in the series |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8100 | 1st Gen (Skylake) | 3 | 8 | DDR4-2666 | FCLGA3647 | 28 |
| 8200 | 2nd Gen (Cascade Lake) | 3 | 8 | DDR4-2933 | FCLGA3647 | 28 |
| 8300 | 3rd Gen (Ice Lake) | 3 | 2 | DDR4-3200 | FCLGA4189 | 40 |
| 8400 | 4th Gen (Sapphire Rapids) | 4 | 2 | DDR5-4800 | FCLGA4677 | 56, or 60 on H parts |
| 8500 | 5th Gen (Emerald Rapids) | 4 | 2 | DDR5-5600 | FCLGA4677 | 64 |
Read the suffix before ordering. Intel defines U parts as single-socket only, and ARK lists the 5th Gen U parts with no UPI links, so they cannot be paired; the 4th Gen H parts scale to eight sockets, where the standard parts of that generation stop at two.
Servers for Platinum CPUs
Match the socket first. Dell's PowerEdge R640 and R740 accept 1st- and 2nd-generation Platinum, the R750 the 3rd generation, and the R760 the 4th and 5th; all four are under Dell PowerEdge servers. For its DL380 Gen10, HPE lists both early generations but rules out upgrading a server from 1st Gen to 2nd Gen parts in the field.
Compare tiers on Intel Xeon Gold and Intel Xeon Silver, shop by core count on 32-core Xeon processors, or see every generation on Xeon Scalable processors. Platinum CPUs are covered by an Enterasource warranty set out on each listing.
Platinum parts also appear by core count on 24-core Xeon processors, and every Intel family is under Intel Xeon processors.
Xeon Platinum questions
- Is Xeon Platinum better than Xeon Gold?
- It scales further rather than running faster per core. Among socketed parts, Platinum holds the top core count of each generation, 28 in the 1st and 2nd Gen, 40 in the 3rd, 60 in the 4th and 64 in the 5th, plus eight-socket scaling in the 1st and 2nd Gen and a fourth UPI link from the 4th Gen. A Gold part with the same cores and clock does the same work per socket.
- Can Platinum processors run in a two-socket server?
- Yes. Two sockets is the most common Platinum configuration: Dell specifies its two-socket R640 and R740 for 1st and 2nd Gen Platinum, and from the 3rd Gen standard Platinum parts are two-socket processors. The exceptions are U parts, which Intel limits to one socket, and H parts, which Intel builds for four- and eight-socket servers.
