Dell 05RH0 7M 40GbE QSFP+ Passive Direct Attach Twinax Cable

The Dell 05RH0 is a 7-metre 40GBASE-CR4 passive direct attach twinax cable with a fixed QSFP+ connector at each end, carrying 40 Gbps across four 10 Gbps lanes. Seven metres is a long run for copper, which is exactly what makes this part useful.

Where it belongs

Most 40G DAC cabling is intra-rack and short. At 7 m you are reaching the next cabinet, or crossing a row to a spine switch, without moving to optics and structured fibre. That is the whole argument for this length: it removes two transceivers and a patch panel hop from the bill of materials.

Passive copper draws no power and introduces no transceiver electronics, so a 40G DAC link is as simple as a 40G link gets. The tradeoff is bulk - a 7 m QSFP+ twinax is a stiff, heavy cable, and it needs to be planned into the cable management rather than added afterwards.

A note on the length

Dell's current transceivers and cables spec sheet publishes the 40G QSFP+ DAC family at 0.5, 1, 3 and 5 m. Seven metres is not on that list, which makes this a legacy length from an earlier revision of the line. The cable is a genuine Dell part and works exactly as the shorter members of the family do; it is simply no longer catalogued new. If you need this reach today and cannot source the part, the alternative is a 40G active optical cable.

Which switches take it

Any Dell switch with QSFP+ ports: S4048-ON and S4048T-ON (six QSFP+ uplinks each), S4148F-ON and S4148T-ON, S4248FB-ON, the 32-port S6000-ON and S6010-ON, and the N4064 and N4064F on the campus side. A QSFP+ port can also be broken out into four 10GbE SFP+ lanes, but that requires a breakout cable, not this one.
