Dell High Performance Fan for PowerEdge R540 and R740xd2: Read the Model Suffix Twice
Enterasource is proud to present the Dell HKV29, a high-performance cooling fan recorded for the PowerEdge R540 and the PowerEdge R740xd2. The second of those is the one to read carefully, because the character that distinguishes it from a far more common platform is a single digit.
R740xd2 Is Not R740xd
The R740xd2 is a dense-storage 2U machine with its own internal layout; the R740xd is a different platform with a different drive architecture, and the R740 is different again. They are three machines, not three spellings of one. Our record holds this fan against the R740xd2 and does not extend it to the R740 or the R740xd, and we are not going to extend it for you. This is the most common ordering error in the PowerEdge 2U range and it costs a return rather than a diagnosis, because the fan will not seat.
What "High Performance" Does and Does Not Tell You
Our record marks this part as the high-performance option for those two platforms, but it does not record a grade colour of the kind Dell uses on its later chassis. Treat "high performance" here as a designation carried in our record rather than a graded Dell tier, and confirm the fan a given configuration requires in the platform's Installation and Service Manual.
