960GB Enterprise SSDs
Shop 960GB SSD models in every interface a server uses: SATA 6Gb/s, SAS 12Gb/s and NVMe enterprise drives side by side, as 2.5-inch drives plus M.2 and U.2 NVMe. 960GB sits on the one-drive-write-per-day ladder of enterprise SSD lines and 800GB on the three-a-day ladder, so check the endurance rating before you order. Every drive is checked in our lab on receipt and again before it leaves.

Why 960GB and not 1TB
Enterprise SSDs hold part of their flash back from the user. Seagate describes over-provisioning as setting aside a section of an SSD's capacity that the user cannot access, and says it raises endurance through better wear leveling. That reserve is why the read-intensive capacity steps read 960GB, 1.92TB and 3.84TB rather than round terabytes, and why drives rated for heavier writes reserve more and land at 800GB, 1.6TB and 3.2TB.
| Interface | Link rate | Form factors at 960GB | Where it connects | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SATA 6Gb/s | 6Gb/s | 2.5-inch | A SATA port, or a SAS controller through the backplane | Boot volumes and read-heavy data |
| SAS 12Gb/s | 12Gb/s, dual port | 2.5-inch | A SAS RAID controller or SAS HBA | Arrays behind a RAID controller |
| NVMe | PCIe, x4 per drive | 2.5-inch U.2, M.2 2280 and 22110 | An NVMe-wired bay, or an M.2 slot that takes the drive's length | Boot cards and low-latency data |
Match the interface to your controller or NVMe bays, and check the endurance rating on each listing, which our articles on SSD endurance classes and DWPD vs TBW explain. An M.2 22110 drive needs a slot that takes the 22110 size.
960GB as a boot drive
960GB is a common boot capacity. Dell's BOSS-N1 card holds two 80 mm M.2 NVMe drives, with 480GB and 960GB sizes on its supported list, and Dell designs the card for booting the operating system and advises using it only as a boot device. A 960GB SATA or SAS SSD in a front bay does the same job where no boot card is fitted. See BOSS controller cards and our Dell BOSS card guide.
Enterprise 960GB drives and consumer 1TB drives
The difference is protection and rating, not capacity. Samsung builds power-loss protection into its enterprise SATA SSDs to prevent data corruption in a power failure, and enterprise lines publish a drive-writes-per-day rating for every capacity, which is how a server buyer sizes them.
Compare 800GB, 1.92TB and 3.84TB SSDs or U.2 NVMe SSDs, or shop SATA, SAS, NVMe and M.2 SSDs among our enterprise SSDs. Check the Enterasource warranty term on each listing.
960GB SSD questions
- Why is it 960GB and not 1TB?
- Because enterprise drives reserve flash for endurance. KIOXIA's enterprise lines use 960GB as the first step of the one-drive-write-per-day ladder and 800GB for the three-per-day ladder, which holds back more. The number is decimal as well: KIOXIA counts 1GB as 10^9 bytes, so an operating system that reports binary units shows a 960GB drive as about 894GB.
- Is a 960GB enterprise SSD good as a boot drive?
- Yes. Dell lists 960GB M.2 NVMe drives for its BOSS-N1 boot card, which it designs for booting the operating system, and a 960GB SATA or SAS SSD works as a boot volume in a front bay. Enterprise drives add a drive-writes-per-day rating and, on Samsung's enterprise SATA line, power-loss protection; check a consumer drive's data sheet for both before booting from it.
